Why do guys need to spit so much?

This just perplexes me. Do men make more saliva then women? It just seems that you see guys spitting a lot more then you do women. With the 35W bridge down I drive through downtown now and it just seems that at every bus stop, some dude is spitting. Then you start thinking about sports, baseball players are always spitting.
